Product Focus - Blade Servers
Currently, Blade Servers are the fastest growing server segment within information technology. According to analysts at International Data Corporation (IDC), Blade Centers will enjoy a 60 percent CAGR between 2003 and 2007. Shipments are expected to reach a volume of 340,000 units 2004 and account for $1 billion in revenue.
Blade Servers are modular servers built on a single motherboard, with integrated memory and processor. They fit in a single chassis in a manner similar to books on a bookshelf. Still, each is an independent server with its own processor, memory, storage, controllers and applications. Each blade simply slides into a bay in the chassis and plugs into a middle- or back-plane, sharing power, floppy drives, switches, ports and fans with other blade servers.
IBM, an acknowledged leader in Blade Server technology, currently has three models in its IBM BladeCenter product line:
IBM Blade Center HS20, with up to two high performance Intel Xeon processors. This model is suited for such applications as collaboration, Citrix, Linux clusters and compute-centric applications.
IBM Blade Center HS40, with up to four high performance Intel Xeon processors MP is an excellent choice for commercial transactions, databases, ERP/CPM applications and next-generation network applications.
IBM BladeCenter JS20 delivers previously unattainable levels of price/performance for POWER technology users. It includes a 64-bit PowerPC 970 processor, enhanced with 162 Single Instruction/Multiple Data (SIMD) instructions. The JS20 provides 64-bit Linux support to help users with data-intensive applications simplify their programming and improve application performance.
